History of ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium
The ground opened in 2003 on the northern outskirts of Visakhapatnam, in the Pothinamallayyapalem area. The low stands and surrounding hills are recurring features in descriptions of the venue. It is operated by the Andhra Cricket Association, whose administrative address is at the stadium on NH-16. The site was selected as a major cricket facility for the city and has remained the principal international ground in the Andhra region.
International cricket arrived on 5 April 2005, when India played Pakistan in the second ODI of the series. India won by 58 runs, and M.S. Dhoni scored 148, his first ODI hundred. The match established the venue as a regular India limited-overs ground. The result and Dhoni’s innings are still the defining early episode in the ground’s international history. It also gave the new stadium an early place in India’s international calendar.
The stadium received Test status and staged its first Test in November 2016, India against England. It has since hosted Tests, men's and women's ODIs, and men's and women's T20Is. Domestic cricket, including Andhra fixtures, remains part of its programme. The 2016 Test marked the venue’s progression from a limited-overs location to a multi-format international ground. The ground therefore became a venue for all three men’s international formats.
The venue is known for a well-drained outfield and a generally true grass surface. It has also been used for Indian Premier League matches, including fixtures involving Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad and other designated home teams. The official association contact page continues to use the Dr. YSR name, while current ground listings use ACA–VDCA; the naming change should be checked before publication.
