Odds explained: decimal, Indian rate and implied chance

A rate is just a way of writing a chance. Once you can switch between decimal, Indian rate and implied chance, every price on the board makes sense.

Decimal rates

A decimal rate is the total return for each ₹1 staked, including the stake. ₹100 at 1.90 returns ₹190 if the selection wins: ₹90 profit plus your ₹100 back.

Indian rates

An Indian rate is the profit on a ₹100 stake. To convert, subtract 1 from the decimal rate and multiply by 100. A decimal 1.85 is an Indian rate of 85: ₹85 profit on ₹100.

Implied chance

Divide 1 by the decimal rate to get the chance the price implies. 2.00 implies 50%, 2.50 implies 40% and 1.25 implies 80%. This is the number to compare with a model estimate.

Why the chances add up to more than 100%

In a market with a house margin, the implied chances of all outcomes add up to more than 100%. The extra is the margin. FairPlay publishes its margins on the rates page, and How FairPlay rates work walks through a worked example.
