History of Indira Priyadarshini Stadium

Established in 1987, the stadium became Visakhapatnam's first venue for international cricket. Its opening ODI was India against New Zealand on 10 December 1988. India won by four wickets after New Zealand made 196/9; K. Srikkanth took five wickets and later scored 70. The ground was also known as the Municipal Corporation Vizag Stadium.

The venue staged five ODIs in total. The best-known was the Australia–Kenya Group A match at the 1996 World Cup, when Australia won by 97 runs and Mark Waugh made 130. Its last ODI was India against Australia on 3 April 2001. Australia made 338/4 and won by 93 runs, with Matthew Hayden scoring 111 and Ricky Ponting 101.

International cricket moved to the newer ACA–VDCA stadium at PM Palem, constructed in 2003. The Andhra Cricket Association and Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association had maintained the older ground, but control later passed to GVMC. Reports in 2023 described damaged stands and drainage problems. GVMC undertook a redevelopment in 2024, including repairs to the pavilion, seating, roads and drainage, while retaining the site as a multi-sport facility rather than an international cricket ground.
