History of Indira Gandhi Stadium
The ground was established in 1969 and was formerly called Municipal Stadium. It stands in the middle of Vijayawada and has served as a centre for several sports, with sporting associations using facilities in the stadium galleries. The reported gallery capacity is 25,000.
Its international cricket record is brief but includes two notable one-day matches. England Women played Pakistan Women here on 12 December 1997 in the Women's World Cup. India then hosted West Indies in the venue's only men's ODI on 24 November 2002.
The ground did not become a regular international venue. Concerns about facilities limited follow-up, while the ground remained a regular domestic venue. In 2026, the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh announced a phased redevelopment covering athletics, football, tennis, basketball and later indoor facilities; this is a multi-sport upgrade rather than a confirmed return to international cricket.
