History of Gymkhana Ground

Bombay Gymkhana was established on 19 June 1875 as a central sporting club for the city's British community. The ground, at the southern end of Azad Maidan, became an important setting for early Bombay cricket. It hosted annual matches involving the Gymkhana, Parsee and Hindu teams, and later became associated with the Bombay Quadrangular and Pentangular traditions. The club's present address is on Mahatma Gandhi Road opposite Fashion Street in Fort.

The ground's defining event was India's first Test on home soil. India, led by C. K. Nayudu, met Douglas Jardine's England from 15 to 18 December 1933. England won by nine wickets, but Lala Amarnath's 118 in the second innings was India's first Test century. Bryan Valentine made 136 for England, while Mohammad Nissar took five wickets in England's innings. The match also introduced several Indian players to Test cricket.

Gymkhana Ground did not remain a senior international venue for long. Brabourne Stadium took over Bombay's major international and Pentangular fixtures in 1937, and later Wankhede Stadium became Mumbai's principal international ground. The Gymkhana site continues as a multi-sport club facility. It also hosted a women's ODI between India and Australia on 16 December 2004, the last international match shown in the venue's listed records.
