Wankhede Stadium pitch report

How the surface usually plays, then the figures from completed matches stored at this ground (average first-innings score is the median).

Wankhede uses a grass surface on a square made with local red soil. The surface has generally supported stroke-making, while the sea breeze can help new-ball movement. Spin can become more influential as a Test wears on, although the 2004–05 Australia Test turned sharply earlier than usual.

  • Red soil contributes bounce and usually helps batting.
  • Sea breeze can assist seam and swing early and late in a day.
  • Spinners may get more help late in a Test.
  • The 2011 redevelopment included a sand-based drainage system for faster recovery after rain.

History of Wankhede Stadium

Mumbai’s first Test was played at the Gymkhana Ground in 1933–34, while the Cricket Club of India’s Brabourne Stadium hosted the city’s post-war Tests. A dispute between the CCI and the Mumbai Cricket Association over match-ticket allocation led the association to plan its own ground. The new stadium was built near Churchgate in about 13 months and named after S. K. Wankhede.

The first Test at Wankhede began on 23 January 1975, when India met the West Indies. Clive Lloyd made 242 not out and the visitors won by 201 runs. India’s first win at the venue came against New Zealand two seasons later. The ground then became a regular Mumbai venue for Tests, one-day internationals and domestic cricket.

The stadium was selected for the 2011 World Cup final and underwent a major redevelopment from 2009 to 2011. North and south stands were rebuilt, old benches were replaced with individual seats, and a sand-based drainage system was installed. The redevelopment reduced the stated capacity from roughly 39,000 to about 33,100 while improving sightlines, circulation and spectator facilities.

The rebuilt venue hosted the 2011 World Cup final, where India beat Sri Lanka. It also staged Sachin Tendulkar’s final international match in November 2013. Further work restored the outfield for the 2023 World Cup, during which Wankhede hosted matches including the India–New Zealand semi-final. The 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup schedule included the second semi-final here on 5 March 2026.

The ground remains a home venue for Mumbai cricket and the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Its offices also house the Mumbai Cricket Association and the Board of Control for Cricket in India. BCCI’s venue listing records the Garware Pavilion End and Tata End, grass surface and floodlights.

By 6 June 2026 Wankhede’s international programme had included 27 men’s Tests, 28 men’s ODIs and 17 men’s T20Is, plus women’s internationals. The list gives 23 January 1975 as the first international date and 5 March 2026 as the latest; the latter is consistent with the ICC’s 2026 T20 World Cup match listing, while older Wikipedia page text has not yet reflected it.
