History of Brabourne Stadium

The ground was developed on reclaimed land presented to the Cricket Club of India by Lord Brabourne, then Governor of Bombay. Its foundation stone was laid on 22 May 1936. The plan combined a cricket ground with covered spectator accommodation, pavilions and other club facilities. The first match, played before completion, took place in October 1937. The stadium was formally opened on 7 December 1937, when a CCI XI met Lord Tennyson's touring team.

Brabourne quickly became a centre for major Bombay cricket. The Bombay Pentangular moved there from the Bombay Gymkhana in the 1937–38 season, and the ground hosted important first-class contests involving leading Indian batsmen. Its pavilion and public stands were designed as part of the CCI complex, with the Governor's Pavilion and the Maharaja of Patiala Pavilion alongside the clubhouse. The structure is recognised as a Grade II-B heritage building.

The venue staged its first Test on 9 December 1948, when India played West Indies. It hosted 17 men's Tests from 1948 to 1973, including India's 1952 Test win over Pakistan and notable matches involving Vijay Hazare, Gundappa Viswanath and Abbas Ali Baig. Crowding and disagreements over ticketing eventually contributed to the Bombay Cricket Association developing Wankhede Stadium nearby. Mumbai's international matches moved there from January 1975.

International cricket returned in the 2000s for selected events. Brabourne staged five matches in the 2006 Champions Trophy and hosted India's one-off men's T20I against Australia on 20 October 2007, the first men's T20I played in India. After a gap of more than 36 years between Tests, India met Sri Lanka here from 2 December 2009; Virender Sehwag made 293 and India posted 726/9 declared in an innings victory.

The ground continues to serve Mumbai cricket even though its most recent listed international was a women's T20I on 20 December 2022. It has hosted Indian Premier League matches in several seasons, including 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2022, and was one of the venues for the inaugural Women's Premier League season in 2023. The CCI remains the ground's owner and operator, while Mumbai teams use it for domestic fixtures and training.

By 6 June 2026 Brabourne's international totals were 18 men's Tests, nine men's ODIs and one men's T20I, plus 11 women's ODIs and 10 women's T20Is. The first listed international is the India–West Indies Test beginning 9 December 1948. The last is India Women v Australia Women, the fifth T20I on 20 December 2022; later use has been domestic or franchise cricket rather than international matches.
