History of Narendra Modi Stadium
The ground was established in 1982 beside the Sabarmati river and first hosted international cricket on 12 November 1983, when India played the West Indies in a Test. It was known through much of its early history as Gujarat Stadium or Sardar Patel Stadium. The venue became a regular stop for India, Gujarat and visiting teams, including matches in the 1987, 1996 and 2011 World Cups.
The old stadium was demolished in October 2015 rather than simply refurbished. The Gujarat Cricket Association chose a complete rebuild, with the design expanding the site to 63 acres and adding four dressing rooms, indoor and outdoor practice areas, a cricket academy and a 360-degree concourse. The association says the reconstruction was completed in February 2020.
The rebuilt ground opened to the public for the Namaste Trump event on 24 February 2020. On 24 February 2021, it was formally inaugurated and renamed Narendra Modi Stadium. Its first international match in the rebuilt form came the same day: the day-night third Test between India and England. The venue uses a circular roof with LED lighting and a drainage system designed to clear water quickly.
Ahmedabad has since hosted major India fixtures and tournament matches at the rebuilt venue. The 2022 National Games opening ceremony was held here. The stadium staged the 2023 World Cup opener and final, and its calendar later included the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup final on 8 March 2026. By 6 June 2026 the ground had hosted 16 Tests, 32 ODIs, 15 T20Is, seven women's ODIs and three women's T20Is, with 8 March 2026 as the latest international date.
