History of Lalabhai Contractor Stadium
The ground was established in 1993 and became a Surat base for Gujarat cricket. Its first listed major fixture was a Duleep Trophy match between West Zone and East Zone. The stadium subsequently hosted domestic competitions including the Ranji Trophy, Irani Cup and Duleep Trophy. It is in Vesu, on Surat Dumas Road, and is owned by the Surat District Cricket Association (SDCA).
The site was enabled by a land donation made in 1986–87 by members of the Contractor family in memory of Lalbhai Ramjibhai Contractor. The Gujarat Cricket Association's account says the donated area was 86,730 square yards, with further contributions from other donors. SDCA says the association's wider ground occupies about 1,10,000 square yards. These figures describe land, not seating capacity.
SDCA revamped the stadium in 2009, with contemporary reports describing a planned investment in renovation and improved facilities. The association later added day-and-night capability. Its own website lists a main pavilion, member cabins and separate media, VIP and committee facilities, while a 2019 report described floodlight infrastructure prepared for international cricket.
Surat received its first international fixtures when India Women played South Africa Women in a T20I series in September and October 2019. The venue's first international was on 24 September, and its last listed international was on 4 October. The ground has hosted four women's T20Is, although an older Wikipedia narrative says five.
The stadium remains a domestic cricket venue associated with Gujarat. In 2022, Chennai Super Kings used the ground for preparation ahead of the IPL season, according to contemporary reporting. SDCA has also publicised wider sporting and recreation facilities at its complex. Plans reported by the association have included increasing spectator capacity and developing additional club-house and hospitality facilities.
