Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium pitch report

The venue had only a small competitive sample when it opened. Reports before the first T20I described dry practice wickets and suggested that the new ball could offer some help under lights, while match-day views differed: Bangladesh's Towhid Hridoy expected a slow, low surface, whereas India's Suryakumar Yadav expected a good competitive T20 pitch. The MP T20 League had also produced several high scores, so a generally sound batting surface was the better-supported expectation.

  • Nine playing pitches are part of MPCA's international-dimension ground plan.
  • Dry practice wickets and possible early seam movement under lights were reported before the first T20I.
  • Pre-match assessments disagreed on whether the surface would be slow and low or a good batting wicket.
  • There is not enough international match history to make a reliable long-term spin, pace or dew trend claim.

History of Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium

Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association began work on its own Gwalior venue in 2011 after securing a plot of about 30 acres off the Mumbai–Agra bypass. The site is roughly 8 kilometres from Gwalior city. The stadium was planned in stages so the initial build could later be expanded.

The stadium was completed and inaugurated in 2024. It was named for Madhavrao Scindia, the former BCCI president and Union minister. The association's official plan specifies an initial capacity of about 30,000, with structural provision for a further 20,000 seats. The venue includes nine playing pitches, a practice ground, indoor training, team facilities, a media centre and floodlights.

Before the first international, the venue hosted matches in the Madhya Pradesh Premier League in June 2024. Those games provided its first competitive cricket, but India v Bangladesh was the first top-level international fixture. The move gave Gwalior a modern MPCA-owned venue while international cricket shifted away from the older Captain Roop Singh Stadium.

India's first T20I against Bangladesh took place on 6 October 2024. India made 132 for 3 after Bangladesh scored 127 and won by seven wickets. The stadium has no Tests, no ODIs and one men's T20I.

Early public descriptions differ on capacity: MPCA's page describes a 30,000-seat first stage and a 50,000-seat final design, while 50,000 is also cited.
