History of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium

The stadium was established in 1964 under the Indore Municipal Corporation. It began as a cricket venue and later became a multi-sports site used for football, kho kho and basketball as well. The ground is associated with Indore's cricket history and has a statue of C.K. Nayudu near the main entrance. Madhya Pradesh is its home team.

Its first men's ODI was India against West Indies on 1 December 1983. The venue went on to host nine men's ODIs and two women's ODIs. The 25 December 1997 India–Sri Lanka ODI was abandoned after three overs because the pitch was judged unsafe, and the ground was suspended from hosting matches for two years. This incident damaged its prospects as an international venue.

The final men's ODI was India against Australia on 31 March 2001. Sachin Tendulkar made 139 and became the first batter to pass 10,000 ODI runs during the match, while India made 299/8. By 2025, ESPNcricinfo reported that the stadium had not hosted competitive cricket since 2001 and had become a worn multi-sports complex; Indore's international cricket had moved to Holkar Stadium.
