History of Holkar Stadium
The ground was formerly known as Maharani Usharaje Trust Cricket Ground. The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association renamed it Holkar Stadium in 2010, using the name of the Holkar dynasty associated with Indore's history. The venue is on Race Course Road and serves as the association's main Indore ground and headquarters. Its listed home sides are the Madhya Pradesh men's and women's teams.
Holkar Stadium entered the international calendar on 15 April 2006, when India played England in an ODI. It was India's 156th ODI venue, and the ground then became a regular site for international cricket. It also stages most of Madhya Pradesh's Ranji Trophy home matches and has hosted Duleep Trophy cricket. The venue is floodlit for day-night matches.
The stadium hosted its first Test from 8 October 2016, India against New Zealand. India won that match and Holkar became India's 22nd Test venue. Its first men's T20I followed on 22 December 2017, when India met Sri Lanka. The venue has also hosted Indian Premier League matches, including games involving Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011 and Kings XI Punjab in later seasons.
The ground's short square boundaries, reported at about 56 metres, help explain its reputation for run-making in limited-overs cricket. In 2011, Virender Sehwag made 219 against the West Indies here, then the third-highest men's ODI score. The pavilions were named after C. K. Nayudu and Mushtaq Ali in 2011. As of 18 January 2026, the listed international programme comprised three men's Tests, eight men's ODIs, four men's T20Is and five women's ODIs.
