History of Captain Roop Singh Stadium

The venue was established in 1978 and was originally used as a hockey stadium. It was later converted into a cricket ground and became a home venue for Madhya Pradesh. The ground is named after hockey player Roop Singh, and its listed owner is the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association; the Gwalior Division Cricket Association has been identified as operator.

International cricket arrived on 22 January 1988, when West Indies beat India by 73 runs in the sixth ODI of the series. Floodlights were installed ahead of the 1996 World Cup, and the ground hosted India versus West Indies in that tournament. It also staged the 1996-97 Ranji Trophy final under lights, a five-day match between Mumbai and Delhi that Mumbai secured on the first-innings lead.

The stadium's final listed men's ODI was India versus South Africa on 24 February 2010. India made 401/3 and won by 153 runs, with Sachin Tendulkar unbeaten on 200. Gwalior later gained a separate international venue, Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium, which hosted its first men's T20I in 2024; no later international match is listed for Captain Roop Singh Stadium through 6 June 2026.
