M. Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch report
How the surface usually plays, then the figures from completed matches stored at this ground (average first-innings score is the median).
Reports describe Chinnaswamy as a compact ground with short boundaries and a generally flat, true pitch. Those features can reward clean strokeplay, while the venue's altitude and enclosed layout can help lofted shots carry. Conditions are not uniformly batter-friendly: slower surfaces have appeared in day matches, and Bengaluru rain can interrupt play. Dew may make the ball harder to grip in evening limited-overs matches, but a match-specific assessment is needed.
- Short boundaries increase the value of well-timed aerial shots.
- A true surface can offer pace and bounce for strokeplay.
- Slower pitches have been used, so spin and change of pace can matter when the surface wears.
- Rain interruptions are a recurring weather consideration in Bengaluru.

History of M. Chinnaswamy Stadium
The ground was established in 1969 and was initially known as the KSCA Stadium. The stadium building was completed in 1974 on Mahatma Gandhi Road, close to Cubbon Road in central Bengaluru. It took the name of M. Chinnaswamy, a former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and a leading figure in Karnataka cricket. The first men's Test, India against West Indies, began on 22 November 1974.
The venue became part of Karnataka's rise in domestic cricket. Its first Test also featured the international debuts of West Indies batters Vivian Richards and Gordon Greenidge. The Karnataka State Cricket Association later added modern player, media and commentary facilities, and the ground became a home venue for India as well as Karnataka. It also houses the National Cricket Academy complex associated with Indian cricket development.
International cricket expanded at the ground through the 1980s and 1990s. The first men's ODI was played on 26 September 1982 against Sri Lanka. The 1996 World Cup quarter-final between India and Pakistan was the first match at the stadium played under floodlights, according to the match record. Later, Bengaluru became a regular limited-overs and Indian Premier League venue, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru using it as their home ground.
The stadium hosted 12 men's World Cup ODIs, including matches at the 2011 and 2023 tournaments. A notable 2011 group match between India and England ended in a tie after both sides made 338. The ground's most recent men's international is India's Test against New Zealand from 16 to 20 October 2024. KSCA continues to use the venue for international, domestic and franchise cricket, with capacity figures varying between published sources.
