History of Kanchenjunga Stadium
The ground was established in the 1980s, on land previously known as Tilak Maidan. The stadium was inaugurated with the Nehru Gold Cup in 1987, when the football tournament brought international teams to Siliguri. Its principal uses have remained football and cricket rather than international cricket.
Kanchenjunga Stadium became a venue for domestic cricket, including Ranji Trophy matches. Bengal's first Ranji Trophy match at the ground was against Punjab in 2010, and the venue has hosted 11 Ranji matches. The ground has also hosted major football competitions, including the 2013–14 Santosh Trophy final and the 2016 SAFF Women's Championship.
The West Bengal government assumed control in 2021, dissolving the earlier Kanchenjunga Stadium Committee and assigning the district youth officer to oversee the venue. A contemporary report cited poor drainage, water supply and ageing structures, as well as a lack of modern changing, media and VIP facilities. Cricket activity continued: the Siliguri Challengers Trophy returned in May 2024, with eight of its matches scheduled under floodlights.
