Eden Gardens is generally described as a grass-surface ground whose Test pitches can offer pace and seam movement early, with batting becoming easier in the initial period. Recent reporting described a straw-coloured surface that could bring spin more into play from the third day. Conditions vary with preparation, weather and match format.
- Early movement and carry can assist seamers, particularly in Test matches.
- Spin may become more influential as a Test wears on and the surface loses freshness.
- The ground uses a grass playing surface.
- Dew and humidity can affect evening conditions.

History of Eden Gardens
Eden Gardens was established in 1864 in the Maidan area of Kolkata. The name is associated with Emily and Fanny Eden, sisters of George Eden, the first Earl of Auckland and Governor-General of India. The ground became Bengal's principal cricket venue and later developed into a large international stadium. Its location beside Kolkata's central civic and cultural districts has kept it closely tied to the city's sporting life.
India played England in the first Test at Eden Gardens from 5 to 8 January 1934. The venue later became a regular home ground for India, Bengal's men's and women's teams, and, from 2008, Kolkata Knight Riders. Its central Kolkata setting also made it a prominent venue for major one-day tournaments. International cricket at the ground has included men's and women's fixtures across several formats.
The stadium was rebuilt and modernised around the 2010–11 period, reducing the published capacity from the much larger pre-renovation figure. Floodlights support day-night cricket. The Cricket Association of Bengal is the operating association, while the stadium land and ownership are attributed to the Eastern Command of the Indian Army. The modern bowl retains the historic venue's two named ends and club-house facilities.
Eden Gardens has hosted major World Cup and World T20 fixtures as well as Test cricket. The 1996 India–Sri Lanka semi-final was abandoned after crowd trouble. In the 2001 Test against Australia, India recovered after following on, with V. V. S. Laxman's 281 central to the victory. The ground continues to host international and domestic cricket; the latest match is dated 4 March 2026.
