History of Calcutta Cricket and Football Club
The cricket institution that underpins the club was reported in the Madras Courier on 23 February 1792. It initially played on open ground around the Esplanade and Hooghly river. In 1825 it obtained a Maidan plot, and in 1841 it was allowed to fence the ground. Pressure from the military later pushed the club towards the eastern end of the Auckland Circus Gardens, where it built a pavilion at Eden Gardens in the nineteenth century.
The present club took shape in Ballygunge after the older Calcutta Cricket Club received the Ballygunge Cricket Club lease and the latter dissolved. Calcutta Football Club had moved part of its Maidan operation in 1963; it merged with the cricket club in 1965. The Ballygunge cricket ground hosted the sole recorded women’s Test there, India v England from 17 to 20 November 1995. It remains a club and domestic sports site, but the ground’s international use ended after that match.
