History of K.S. Narayanan Centre for Cricketing Excellence
The ground was established in 1998 within the IIT Madras campus and is also recorded as the Indian Institute of Technology Chemplast Ground. It became a venue for Tamil Nadu domestic cricket and for training and practice activity. IIT Madras describes the cricket ground as one of its campus sports facilities, alongside the institute's cricket club and other playing areas.
International cricket at the ground was limited to women's one-day matches. India Women played New Zealand Women in the venue's first women's ODI on 16 December 2003. A women's quadrangular tournament in 2007 provided the final matches, with India Women v England Women on 5 March 2007 the last international. In May 2017, the ground was renamed the K.S. Narayanan Centre for Cricketing Excellence and plans were announced to relay the playing area after heavy use and water-supply problems.
The venue is still identified by IIT Madras as a campus cricket facility, but it is no longer a regular international ground. Its facilities include a pavilion and practice pitches, according to reporting on the 2017 redevelopment. The ground has been associated with Chemplast-Sanmar's Jolly Rovers and Alwarpet teams, while IIT Madras continues to host cricket activity and the Sanmar Tournament on campus.
