History of Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium

Opened in 1983, the ground became the first venue in Indian-administered Kashmir to host an international cricket match. Its debut was an India-West Indies ODI on 13 October that year. The game was disrupted when spectators entered the field and damaged the pitch during the interval; rain and a dust storm then shortened the contest.

Srinagar hosted only one more men's international, India versus Australia on 9 September 1986. The Central Reserve Police Force later occupied the venue for about 18 years during a period of militant violence. That use restricted cricket, with dressing rooms unavailable and local matches sometimes relying on temporary facilities.

The CRPF decided to leave in 2007, after which the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association began renovating the stands and outfield. First-class cricket returned in 2009, and the stadium has since hosted domestic fixtures, including the 2021 Kashmir Premier League final. A 2026 report said it was scheduled to host the Irani Cup, indicating a renewed domestic role rather than a return to international cricket.
