History of Sawai Mansingh Stadium
The stadium was built in 1969 during the reign of Sawai Man Singh II, the former ruler of Jaipur. It is owned by the Government of Rajasthan and run by the Rajasthan Cricket Association. The venue is at Janpath in Lalkothi, Jaipur, and is commonly shortened to SMS Stadium. Its listed playing surface is grass, with the Van Vihar Colony and Garh Ganesh Temple ends.
Jaipur entered men's international cricket on 2 October 1983, when India defeated Pakistan by four wickets in the stadium's first ODI. The ground then staged its only men's Test in February 1987. India and Pakistan drew that match after rain curtailed play; it was remembered for Sunil Gavaskar's first-ball dismissal and Pakistan President Zia-ul-Haq's visit on the second day.
The ground hosted World Cup matches in 1987 and 1996, and later became a venue for the 2006 Champions Trophy. It underwent a major redevelopment in 2006, including new spectator and media facilities and a cricket academy. Rajasthan Royals played their first IPL home match here on 21 April 2008 and have continued to use Jaipur as their principal home venue in the seasons listed by current venue references.
The most recent international fixture was the India–New Zealand men's T20I on 17 November 2021. Current venue information still lists floodlights and domestic fixtures, including Rajasthan matches. By June 2026 the ground had hosted one men's Test, 19 men's ODIs, one men's T20I, nine women's ODIs and no women's Tests or women's T20Is.
