Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium pitch report
How the surface usually plays, then the figures from completed matches stored at this ground (average first-innings score is the median).
Early preparation reports described a balanced green surface made with an eight-inch black-cotton-soil top layer, with grass intended to provide bounce and assistance for fast bowlers while retaining batting value. The ground was also built with perforated drainage beneath the grass and a sand-based outfield. Conditions should not be treated as fixed: a February 2026 BCCI inspection found the pitch uneven and in poor condition, alongside drainage and maintenance shortcomings.
- Black cotton soil was used in the upper layer of the main pitch.
- The inaugural curator described the prepared surface as green and balanced, with some early help for fast bowlers.
- The venue's 2026 inspection reported that pitch and outfield conditions were not suitable for a high-profile domestic match.

History of Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium
Uttarakhand's creation as a state left it short of major cricket infrastructure, and the stadium project was intended to give local players a substantial home venue. The foundation stone was laid in November 2012. The completed ground was inaugurated on 16 December 2016 by Chief Minister Harish Rawat with IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla. Contemporary reporting put the cost at about ₹237.20 crore.
The first match at the new ground was a domestic fixture between Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Its design and facilities were planned to international standards, with a 25,000 capacity, floodlights, corporate boxes and a clubhouse complex. The seating pattern was designed to resemble Aipan, a traditional Kumaoni art form. The facility is on about 23 acres in the Raipur area.
Afghanistan adopted Dehradun as a second home venue in India. The stadium entered the international calendar on 3 June 2018 when Afghanistan beat Bangladesh in the first of three T20Is. The ground later hosted five Afghanistan–Ireland ODIs and the Afghanistan–Ireland Test in March 2019, completing its initial international programme.
The ground remains the home venue of the Uttarakhand team and has also staged franchise and veterans' cricket. Its later record has been affected by maintenance concerns. In February 2026, the BCCI moved a Ranji Trophy semi-final after an inspection reported an uneven pitch, drainage deficiencies and wider maintenance problems. The Cricket Association of Uttarakhand said it would work with the state government on upgrades.
