History of Indira Gandhi International Cricket Stadium

The Uttarakhand government signed a project agreement on 7 November 2014 for a new sports complex on about 30.20 hectares at Gaulapar. The foundation stone was laid on 9 November 2014. The cricket ground formed part of the larger complex beside the Gola River and Haldwani Bypass Road. It was inaugurated on 18 December 2016 by Harish Rawat, then chief minister of Uttarakhand.

The complex was planned as a district sports hub rather than only a cricket ground. The architect's completed-project description lists a 10,000-seat cricket stadium that can be expanded to 25,000, along with practice pitches, athletics, football, hockey, indoor sports and an aquatic centre. During the 38th National Games in January–February 2025, the cricket field was temporarily converted to a full-size football pitch and the venue hosted football matches after a facilities upgrade. No international cricket match has been played at this ground.
