History of Keenan Stadium
The ground was built in 1939 and named after John Lawrence Keenan, a former Tata Steel general manager. ESPNcricinfo records its first-class debut in December 1939, when Bihar played Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. It became a regular venue for Bihar and, after the state split, Jharkhand cricket. The ground has also been used for touring-team warm-up fixtures and for football and archery.
Keenan Stadium entered the international calendar with India v West Indies on 7 December 1983. The venue later hosted 10 men’s ODIs, one women’s Test and three women’s ODIs. Its final international was India v England on 12 April 2006. Sources confirm the end of international use, but do not identify one formal reason; Ranchi’s newer JSCA International Stadium Complex subsequently became the state’s principal international venue.
