History of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium
The Government of India built the stadium for the 1982 Asian Games. It opened in 1983 and became part of the wider Jawaharlal Nehru sports complex, which also houses the Sports Authority of India. The venue was designed for athletics and ceremonies rather than as a dedicated cricket ground.
Cricket came to the ground through two day-night ODIs. Australia beat India by 48 runs on 28 September 1984 in the first international match recorded there. South Africa then defeated India by eight wickets on 14 November 1991. The available ground record shows no later men's international, and the stadium is therefore classified here as a former international cricket venue.
The stadium underwent major reconstruction for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. It hosted the athletics programme and the opening and closing ceremonies, with the redevelopment credited to Gerkan, Marg and Partners and Schlaich Bergermann Partner. The venue remains a multi-sport facility, with football and athletics its principal uses rather than cricket.
