How the surface usually plays, then the figures from completed matches stored at this ground (average first-innings score is the median).
ESPNcricinfo lists a grass pitch. The ground has produced contrasting conditions: the 1987 Test featured unpredictable bounce on an underprepared wicket, while a 2025 report said a new red-soil surface was expected to offer good bounce and support higher scoring. Match-day behaviour can therefore vary with preparation and moisture.
- Grass surface, according to ESPNcricinfo.

History of Barabati Stadium
Opened in 1958, Barabati Stadium became the principal home of cricket in Odisha. The Odisha Cricket Association has had its office at the ground since the association was registered in 1961. The stadium is also used for football and has hosted state and national competitions, giving it a wider sporting role than cricket alone.
Barabati entered the international calendar on 27 January 1982, when India beat England by five wickets in the third ODI played in India. It hosted its first Test in January 1987 against Sri Lanka. India won by an innings and 67 runs; Dilip Vengsarkar made 166 and Kapil Dev claimed his 300th Test wicket.
The second men's Test came in November 1995 against New Zealand. Rain restricted the match, but Narendra Hirwani took 6 for 59, the best Test innings figures recorded at the ground. Barabati later staged matches at the 1987 and 1996 men's World Cups and the 2013 Women's Cricket World Cup.
The venue remains an active international ground, although Tests have not been a regular part of its programme. It has continued to stage ODIs and T20Is, including India v England on 9 February 2025 and India v South Africa on 9 December 2025.
