How the surface usually plays, then the figures from completed matches stored at this ground (average first-innings score is the median).

The venue has a large outfield, with average boundaries reported at about 80 metres. The first ODI offered noticeable grass cover and new-ball movement. The state association later said it was bringing in red soil to develop a more spin-friendly wicket, while also retaining surfaces that can assist pace. Conditions can therefore vary with preparation and format.

  • The first ODI pitch had decent grass cover and helped seamers early.
  • The average boundary is reported at about 80 metres, making the ground one of India's larger international fields.
  • The association announced red-soil work intended to improve spin assistance; this is a planned change rather than a settled long-term characteristic.

History of Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium

The stadium was built by the Government of Chhattisgarh as part of the development of the new capital region. Construction began in 2006 and the venue was completed and inaugurated in 2008. It is named after Veer Narayan Singh, the Sonakhan landlord associated with the 1857 resistance in Chhattisgarh. The ground is in Sector 3 of Nava Raipur, near Sendh Lake and close to Swami Vivekananda Airport.

The first cricket played at the venue came before international status. Canada played a one-day practice match against the Chhattisgarh state side on 21 November 2010. The venue then became a second home ground for the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL from 2013, bringing top-level domestic matches to the new stadium. BCCI also recorded that the ground hosted IPL from 2013 and was used for camps and tournaments by the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh.

Raipur hosted the 2020–21 Road Safety World Series after the event resumed in March 2021. Matches were played under the tournament's health protocols, with attendance restricted to half the stadium capacity. The ground had also hosted Champions League Twenty20 cricket and other domestic competitions. These fixtures established it as a regular large-event venue before it received men's international cricket.

India and New Zealand played the stadium's first men's ODI on 21 January 2023. India won by eight wickets after dismissing New Zealand for 108, with Mohammad Shami taking three wickets; the match report described a grass-covered surface that offered movement to the new ball. The venue's second ODI was India v South Africa on 3 December 2025. Its first men's T20I was India v Australia on 1 December 2023, and the latest listed international was India v New Zealand on 23 January 2026.

The stadium remained active for domestic and franchise cricket in 2026. The Chhattisgarh government leased management to the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh for 30 years in late 2025, with a planned upgrade to seating, facilities and wickets. The association said it had sourced red soil from Maharashtra while also maintaining wickets that can assist pace. As of 11 October 2026, no Test match had been staged here; the international record stood at two ODIs and two T20Is.
