History of Sector 16 Stadium

The stadium was constructed in the late 1950s and became operational in 1966, according to a local account; Wikipedia gives 1966 as its establishment year. It began with a matting wicket and received a turf wicket in 1970. The ground was an important training base for Chandigarh-area players, including Kapil Dev, Chetan Sharma and Yograj Singh.

Its first international was a rain-reduced 15-over ODI between India and England on 27 January 1985. India and Sri Lanka then played the ground's only men's Test from 23 November 1990. The venue also hosted women's ODIs, including the first on 13 December 1997, according to the ground's reference record.

After the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali was built, Sector 16 lost its regular first-class and international role. Haryana returned for a Ranji Trophy Plate League semi-final in 2004–05, and India played Australia here on 8 October 2007, the last men's ODI listed for the ground. The stadium still functions as a local cricket facility; a 2024 renovation temporarily closed the ground while its centre pitches were relaid.
