History of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium

The stadium was built in 1989 as a football venue and was completed in about six months. It was adapted for cricket soon after opening, and Australia and Sri Lanka played the first ODI there on 25 October 1989 during the Nehru Cup.

Nehru Stadium hosted a limited number of further ODIs, including India matches against Australia and England. The last match in the registry is Sri Lanka v India on 14 February 2007. Cricket allocations also created scheduling tensions because the same venue was needed by Goa's football community.

The ground has since been developed and used mainly for football. It was upgraded for FIFA specifications in the 2010s, hosted 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup matches, and became the home venue of FC Goa.
