History of The Sports Hub
The venue was developed on land leased from the University of Kerala at Kariavattom. Construction began in 2012 and the stadium was completed and opened in 2015. It formed part of Kerala's arrangements for the 35th National Games, including the opening and closing ceremonies. It used a public-private partnership model and was designed for both cricket and football.
Kariavattom Sports Facilities Limited, a subsidiary of Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services, operated the complex in its early years. The facility was built to international cricket and football standards and includes fixed and folding spectator seating. Its multi-purpose design was intended to allow football and other events as well as cricket.
International cricket arrived on 7 November 2017, when India played New Zealand in the third T20I of New Zealand's tour of India. This was the first men's international at the ground and the first of the venue's five men's T20Is. Kerala's return to the international calendar gave Thiruvananthapuram a regular high-level venue after a long gap.
The first men's ODI followed on 1 November 2018, when India met West Indies in the fifth match of their series. India won by nine wickets after bowling West Indies out for 104. The stadium has since continued to host selected international limited-overs cricket, alongside domestic fixtures and football events.
Management became unsettled after KSFL was liquidated and the stadium came under legal proceedings in 2021. The Kerala Cricket Association later spent money on repairs and resumed using the venue for cricket. It has hosted two men's ODIs, five men's T20Is and three women's T20Is, with the most recent men's international on 31 January 2026.
The ground's cricket infrastructure has included a drop-in pitch arrangement. A 2018 report described plans for a pitch prepared away from the playing area so the stadium could switch between cricket and other sports. The surface is grass, and night internationals have been staged under floodlights.
