History of Green Park Stadium
Green Park was established in 1945 and takes its name from a British woman who used the site for horse riding. It stands in Civil Lines near the Ganga. The ground became an international venue when India played England in the fourth Test of the 1951–52 series from 12 January 1952. That match, which England won by eight wickets, began a long association with Test cricket in Kanpur.
The venue's early international history included India's first Test victory over Australia. India beat Australia by 119 runs in the second Test of the 1959–60 series, played from 19 to 24 December 1959. Green Park has also been used for limited-overs cricket since India's first ODI there against Sri Lanka on 24 December 1986. Its flat, grass-covered surface has often produced high-scoring cricket, although match conditions have varied.
Green Park has staged major one-day events, including a 1987 World Cup group match, the opening match of the 1993 Hero Cup and a 1994–95 Wills World Series fixture. It hosted its first day-night ODI on 29 October 2017, when India beat New Zealand by six runs. The venue also held four Indian Premier League matches in 2016 and 2017, when Gujarat Lions used Kanpur as a home venue.
In September 2016, Green Park hosted India's 500th Test, a landmark match against New Zealand that India won by 197 runs. The most recent international match listed for the ground is the India–Bangladesh Test that began on 27 September 2024; India won by seven wickets. That Test also exposed continuing infrastructure concerns, with restrictions placed on part of the C stand after a safety assessment. Capacity figures therefore depend on the seating configuration and the source date.
